P.O.W. Bandi Yuddh Ke Web Series Story

The web series is based on the political thriller Israeli drama Hatufim (Prisoners of War), the original series on which the show Homeland is based. As the name suggests,

The story revolves around two soldiers – Naib Subedar Sartaj Singh (Purab Kohli) and Squadron Leader Iman Khan (Satyadeep Mishra) – who go missing after the 1999 Kargil War. But after 17 years, they manage to escape from a Pakistani prison and return to their families in India.

Since they are away for a long time, what grips us is how families, especially their wives, live on the bleak hope of their return, unable to move on with their lives.

Sartaj Singh’s wife, Harleen (Amrita Puri) educates herself and manages the household expenses and chores, Iman’s wife Nazneen Khan (Sandhya Mridul) at the insistence of their teenage son and daughter, along with Iman’s brother Salim She tries to move on with her life.

There is also another sub-plot that follows, where a government agent suspects Iman and Sartaj’s intentions. It is also shown that the two are hiding something, a mystery that is yet to be solved. What this could be, remains to be seen.

After spending 17 years in captivity, two soldiers who share a dark secret return to their families. The two families try to pick up where they left off, while a government agent tries to uncover their secret.

The show directed by Nikkhil Advani should be given credit for bringing something to Indian television which has never been done before. What is particularly commendable is that more than a war and a political thriller, this is a show that focuses on family drama and emotions.

This helps you connect with the show in a better way. The family structure of the two sepoys is in stark contrast – Sartaj’s middle class living in Patiala is very different from the affluent family of Iman in Delhi. The thought of the scenes brings clarity to the script and is relatively easy to watch.

The main characters of the show shine through everyone be it Purab Kohli, Satyadeep Mishra, Sandhya Mridul or Amrita Puri. Where Purab Kohli brings to the fore the vulnerability of a soldier who has survived the battle of hell, Satyadeep is able to successfully narrate how such difficult experiences in life make a person tough.

The female characters are shown to be powerful and the nuances are brought out well by the two leading ladies. The most emotionally moving scene is when the two families are reunited with the missing soldiers.

Also, the dilemma of a woman in such a situation is well placed by Sandhya Mridul when she compares herself to a pendulum. Amrita Puri’s emotional awkwardness with her husband is bound to make you feel for her.

The show has managed to capture us all through the three episodes that have aired so far. The narrative is captivating and stirs you up emotionally. It keeps you hooked to what will happen next. This is a don’t miss!
