Initially, it is difficult to stream Mumbai Diaries 26/11 on Amazon Prime Video now. Is it a medical thriller or a crime story? Most of the eight episodes, between 30 and 55 minutes, unfold at the Bombay General Hospital, set during the Mumbai terrorist attacks in November 2011; Some people walk towards the Palace Hotel Taj Mahal in front of the Gateway of India.
While cutting down on the number of episodes, it would be prudent to focus on the hospital scene. It could have turned the series starring Nikkhil Advani and Nikkhil Gonsalves into a tighter and more effective work.
A grassroots look at a national tragedy, Mumbai Diaries 26/11 is probably the best thing that C Nikkhil Advani has done. This is not to say that he set a high bar for himself. After all, we are talking about the man who directed Delhi Safari and Katti Batti and made The Empire. But Mumbai Diaries is a solid show by any standard. mainly Indian.
It’s no secret that in a rush to fill some sort of creative and market void during the pandemic era, streamers in India have greenlit every half-made idea that has slipped under their doors, sacrificing storytelling at the altar. Commerce without a second thought.

Mumbai Diaries 26/11 Web Series Story
The plot revolves around Dr. Kaushik Oberoi (Mohit Raina), who saves, even opens the chest cavity and gets the heart pumping again, but throws protocol to the winds.
This enrages the hospital head, Dr. Mani Subramaniam Prakash Belawadi, and the law enforcement agent. But when the pandemic begins with many terrorists waging war against India’s financial capital,
The hospital, surrounded by the wounded and the dead, has to look the other way when Oberoi acts in a way that could be highly suspicious. He performs surgery outside the operation theatre, and even revives a 77-year-old destitute patient by performing a procedure that is unimaginable.
These episodes have stories involving three freshers who join the hospital on the day of murder and destruction. They are completely confused how to handle a situation of this magnitude, and one of them, Ahaan Mirza (Satyajit Dubey), is a Muslim and the religious temptation then comes to the fore.
26/11 A date which is inscribed in the memory of every citizen of Mumbai, as the day when the famous spirit of the city came under a horrific attack from across the border. And as a journalist who covered the 26/11 terror attacks non-stop for all three days, I can say that with confidence. That what happened in those chilly nights of real terror was far more frightening and dramatic than any depiction on the reel. And Mumbai Diaries is no exception.
Director Nikkhil Advani and Nikhil Gonsalves started with the most interesting scene of the story. That is, terrorists fired at journalists at Metro Cinema signal from a moving jeep of Mumbai Police. As the show progresses, many such scenes from real events are recreated and writers Yash Chhetija, Nikhil Gonsalves and Anoushka Mehrotra add a lot of gunpowder to their partly fictional screenplay. But herein lies the biggest problem.
Anyway this is a tall order to do justice to such a highly action packed event, which Mumbai Diary only manages to do in parts. The rest of the time, the show is busy trying to add a lot of subplots and backstories. Most of them never seem healthy or reassuring.
They only drag on a chaotic and hectic narrative, putting it in an endless loop of multiple characters, their relationships, and problems that are difficult to track or even care about after a point. It seems compulsive to add more drama to real incidents like the death of brave police officers.
That said, what the show delivers is a harrowing account of a night of terror when things go horribly wrong. Much of what happened in those nights is covered in a relentless way. And some of it descends with confidence.
The setting up of a crumbling government hospital (by Priya Suhas) epitomizes the crumbling healthcare infrastructure of the time that was in pain to deal with an onslaught of this magnitude. The overall tonal of the show is dark and there is a lot of bloody action, not for the weak hearted.
Despite the huge number of actors in this web-series, most of them get enough screen space, but all their time is not interesting.
Mohit Raina is well cast as the headstrong Dr Kaushik, but his backstory and relationship issues are completely compelling. Konkona Sen Sharma is wasted in a role that doesn’t have a real purpose, like many other characters who add nothing more than runtime and clichés.
Shreya Dhanwantri’s naughty and curious reporter act is repetitive, insensitive and juvenile in the way it is done and written. Ditto for Vasundhara Kaul, who plays her boss. It is time filmmakers stop portraying journalists and media persons as gross caricatures.
